Manchester Airport does not give every passenger the same baggage weight allowance. Start with your airline and the baggage product shown on your booking. Manchester Airport’s own luggage guidance directs passengers to their airline for hand- and hold-baggage size and weight limits.
The important distinction is between what you booked, what one bag may weigh and whether that bag travels in the cabin or hold. A maximum handling weight is not extra allowance included in your ticket.
Airline examples checked against the linked official guidance on 30 September 2026. Confirm the conditions attached to your own flight before packing.
Find the weight limit that actually applies to your bag
Open your booking confirmation and identify the operating airline, bag type, number of pieces and purchased allowance. Then weigh each packed bag separately. Do not compare the weight of all your belongings with a number that applies to just one suitcase.
| What your booking or policy says | What to check |
|---|---|
| Small personal or under-seat bag | The permitted dimensions and any weight rule published for that specific tier. A larger cabin-bag allowance is a different product. |
| 10kg cabin bag | Cabin entitlement, dimensions and weight. The same airline may also sell a separate 10kg checked bag. |
| One checked bag with a stated allowance | The weight of that bag and any paid extra weight or expressly permitted pooling. |
| Maximum weight per item | A limit on an individual piece, not a promise that this amount is included in your fare. |
Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2: three different starting points
These examples are not an all-airline list. They show why an airport-wide answer such as “everyone gets 23kg” would be misleading. Infant, mobility-equipment and specialist-baggage arrangements need separate checking.
Ryanair: a 10kg cabin bag is not a 10kg checked bag
Ryanair’s free personal bag is limited to 40 × 30 × 20cm. Its bag policy does not specify a separate numeric weight ceiling for that small-bag tier; that is not a reason to describe it as an unlimited-weight bag.
Priority & 2 Cabin Bags adds an overhead bag up to 10kg and 55 × 40 × 20cm. Separately, the airline lists checked-bag products of 10kg, 20kg and 23kg. A checked bag is handed over before security; buying it does not grant overhead-locker entitlement.
Use the exact product name in your booking. Our Ryanair 10kg cabin versus checked-bag guide covers that choice in more detail.
easyJet: cabin size and cabin weight must both fit
easyJet’s cabin guidance allows a free small bag up to 45 × 36 × 20cm and 15kg. Its larger cabin envelope is 56 × 45 × 25cm and 15kg, but requires the relevant booking or benefit. Dimensions include handles and wheels, and you must be able to carry and lift the bag yourself.
For the hold, easyJet lists 15kg and 23kg options with additional weight available. The documented 32kg ceiling per item does not turn a 15kg purchase into a 32kg allowance.
Jet2: distinguish a flight-only booking from a package
Jet2.com lists a 10kg cabin allowance, with a main bag no larger than 56 × 45 × 25cm, including handles and wheels, plus a small under-seat bag. Its flight-only baggage page offers paid 22kg hold bags.
Jet2holidays lists an included 22kg checked allowance per person, excluding infants. Do not assume your flight-only booking has the same inclusion as a package holiday. Check the confirmation for the particular product you purchased.
Why “under 32kg” can still mean overweight
Illustrative example: your booking includes one 20kg checked bag, and your packed suitcase weighs 24kg. It is 4kg over that purchased allowance. Seeing a separate 32kg item limit does not remove the 4kg excess. Extra weight, another bag or repacking may be needed under the airline’s current options.
For ordinary checked luggage, Ryanair’s excess-weight guidance distinguishes an excess-kilogram charge from its refusal of individual items above 32kg. Its stated exception for mobility equipment is another reason not to present this as one universal rule for everything carried through Manchester.
Compare the cost and conditions of the available alternatives in your booking. This guide does not quote a universal airport excess-baggage fee.
Can two travellers share their allowance?
Do not assume that travelling together automatically combines allowances. Check whether pooling applies to your airline, booking and bag type.
For example, Ryanair permits checked-bag pooling between passengers on the same flight reservation, while retaining a per-bag cap. That does not establish permission to pool a cabin bag with a checked bag, or to combine allowances across separate reservations.
The practical question is not just “do our bags add up to less than the total?” It is also “does our booking allow this distribution, and is every individual bag within its applicable limit?”
Before leaving for Manchester Airport
- Read the booking: record the airline, cabin or hold product, number of pieces and included or purchased weight.
- Measure and weigh after packing: use the outside dimensions, including wheels and protruding pockets. A light bag can still be too large.
- Resolve excess before travelling: check the airline’s available extra-weight or baggage options. Do not plan around an assumed free tolerance.
- Repeat for the return journey: a different airline, baggage purchase or shopping load can change the result.
The free carry-on packing worksheet provides space to record your booking, measurements and return-flight checks. It is a preparation aid, not airline clearance.
Security screening is a separate question from purchased baggage weight. For liquids, use our Manchester Airport liquids guide and confirm current airport guidance. Passing security does not itself establish that a bag meets the airline’s size, weight or ticket entitlement.
Common questions
Is Manchester Airport’s baggage allowance 20kg, 23kg or 32kg?
There is no single passenger allowance shared by every airline at Manchester. Those numbers may refer to different purchased bags or an individual-item ceiling. Start with the bag allowance on your booking.
My suitcase is only slightly overweight. Will it be accepted?
This guide cannot predict discretionary acceptance or promise a free buffer. Reweigh the packed bag, check the published allowance and resolve any excess rather than depending on another traveller’s experience.
Does changing terminal change my booked weight allowance?
A terminal is not a baggage product. Use the airline and fare conditions for weight entitlement, while separately checking the departure terminal and airport procedures.
Can I move items from the hold bag into my hand luggage?
Only after checking the resulting cabin bag’s size, weight, entitlement and the rules for the items themselves. Moving weight is not a valid solution when it creates a different baggage or security problem.
