Ryanair 10kg bag guide
Ryanair 10kg Cabin vs Check-In Bag: Size, Rules and Which Should You Buy?
Source check: 1 September 2026, 05:33 ICT. Ryanair’s current GB Help Centre, fees page, terms and a live GB booking flow were rechecked together. Prices and availability vary by booking; confirm the product shown for your own flight.
The confusion: two Ryanair bags share the same 10kg label
Ryanair sells two products that both say 10kg, but they do not follow the same journey. The 10kg Cabin Bag goes through security with you and, when Priority & 2 Cabin Bags is available, travels in the overhead locker. The 10kg Check-in Bag is handed over at bag drop before security, travels in the aircraft hold and is collected from the baggage belt after landing.
The weight allowance is the shared part. Size rules, packing rules, airport timing and what happens after landing are different. That is why choosing by the word “10kg” alone can produce the wrong result.
| Question | 10kg Cabin Bag | 10kg Check-in Bag |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it travel? | Overhead locker | Aircraft hold |
| Where do you hand it over? | You keep it through security | Bag-drop desk before security |
| Published cabin size | 55 × 40 × 20cm | Check your live booking display |
| Liquids | Airport-security cabin limits apply | Full-size toiletries can normally go in the hold, subject to prohibited-item rules |
| Power bank | Keep on your person or in the small under-seat bag—not overhead | Never pack it in the checked bag |
| After landing | Leave with your bag | Wait at baggage reclaim |
| Best fit | Fast exit and cabin-safe packing | More flexible liquids and hands-free boarding |
Size: the cabin limit is clear; the checked-bag display needs care
Ryanair’s current bag policy gives the 10kg cabin bag a maximum size of 55 × 40 × 20cm. It is additional to the small 40 × 30 × 20cm personal bag that every fare includes for the space under the seat.
The checked product is less tidy. In the live Ryanair GB booking flow checked for this article on 1 September 2026, the 10kg Check-in Bag was displayed as 120 × 120 × 80cm. Recent Ryanair corporate booking-flow material shows the same figure. However, Ryanair’s public GB Help Centre and current GB terms do not state one dedicated 10kg checked-bag size on every relevant page, while older first-party locale material has used a different figure.
Practical rule: treat 55 × 40 × 20cm as the current cabin limit. For the 10kg checked product, check the exact dimensions shown inside your own live Ryanair booking before choosing a suitcase. The dated booking-flow observation above is not a promise for every route, date or locale.
Do not assume a large case is acceptable just because it weighs less than 10kg. Weight and dimensions are separate conditions. Photograph or save the product details shown in your booking if your case is close to a displayed limit.
Handling: security, bag drop and baggage reclaim
With the cabin option, you control the bag from the airport entrance to the aircraft. That usually means no bag-drop queue and no baggage-belt wait, but everything inside must pass airport security. Liquids and other restricted cabin items must meet the rules at your departure airport. You also need to lift the case into the overhead locker yourself.
With the check-in option, you take the bag to Ryanair’s airport desk before security. It then travels in the hold, so you can board without the larger case. Ryanair promotes this option for full-size liquids and hands-free boarding. The tradeoff is an earlier airport process, possible queues, less access to your belongings in transit and a wait at baggage reclaim.
Battery and power-bank caution
Never put a power bank or spare lithium battery in the 10kg checked bag. Ryanair’s current rule requires power banks in the cabin, with no more than two and each no more than 100Wh. They must be on your person or in the small bag under the seat—not in the overhead bag—and must not be recharged onboard. Follow crew instructions and check Ryanair’s full dangerous-goods rules for other devices.
If Priority & 2 Cabin Bags sells out, Ryanair says you may still be able to add a 10kg Check-in Bag. That is a fallback for carrying the weight, not a replacement with the same handling: the bag must be dropped before security and will not stay with you in the cabin.
Bag-drop cutoff changes on 10 November 2026
Ryanair currently says airport check-in and bag drop close 40 minutes before departure. For flights departing from Tuesday 10 November 2026, Ryanair says that cutoff moves to 60 minutes before departure. A cutoff is the last acceptance time, not a safe arrival target: leave enough margin for queues, document checks and the walk to security.
Price: compare the exact product, not just the cheaper number
Ryanair’s current GB fees table shows broad dynamic ranges. Route, travel date and the point at which you add the bag can change the amount. These are the same-locale ranges visible at the source check:
| Product | At time of booking | Ryanair published “Post Booking / Airport” range |
|---|---|---|
| Priority & 2 Cabin Bags | €/£12.49–€/£36 | €/£19.99–€/£45.50 |
| 10kg Check-in Bag | €/£10.49–€/£44.99 | €/£24.00–€/£75 |
Neither product is always cheaper. Compare the live price for your specific booking. For the 10kg Check-in Bag, Ryanair’s current “More info” separately says non-priority customers without a pre-added bag can buy it at the airport bag-drop desk for €/£35.99; bringing the 10kg check-in bag to the boarding gate can mean refusal or, where available, hold placement for €/£46.00–€/£75.00. These are specific airport scenarios—not evidence that the entire published “Post Booking / Airport” column is one single airport price.
Waiting can cost more and can remove the cabin choice entirely because Priority capacity is limited. If you know which handling path you need, price it during booking and save the final product summary before paying.
Decision: which Ryanair 10kg bag should you choose?
Choose the 10kg Cabin Bag when…
- you want to avoid bag drop and baggage reclaim;
- you can pack within 55 × 40 × 20cm and cabin-security rules;
- your important items need to stay with you; and
- Priority & 2 Cabin Bags is still available at an acceptable live price.
Choose the 10kg Check-in Bag when…
- you need full-size toiletries or another hold-appropriate item;
- you prefer to board without a larger cabin case;
- you accept bag-drop timing and a baggage-belt wait; and
- the dimensions displayed in your live booking fit the suitcase you plan to use.
If you actually want a cabin bag, should you buy Priority or Regular?
A cabin-bag decision can become a fare decision because Regular includes Priority Boarding, a standard reserved seat and the 10kg overhead bag. Read our short Ryanair Basic vs Regular comparison, then use your live prices rather than assuming the bundle wins.
Ryanair 10kg bag FAQ
Are Ryanair’s two 10kg bags the same?
No. One is an overhead cabin product; the other is checked at the airport desk and travels in the hold.
What is the Ryanair 10kg cabin-bag size?
The current maximum is 55 × 40 × 20cm. The included small personal bag is separate and measures 40 × 30 × 20cm.
What is the Ryanair 10kg checked-bag size?
The live GB flow checked on 1 September 2026 displayed 120 × 120 × 80cm, but first-party surfaces have not stated the product consistently. Confirm the dimensions displayed for your own booking.
Does a Regular fare include a 10kg checked bag?
No. Regular includes the 10kg cabin bag for the overhead locker, not a checked bag.
Can I take full-size liquids in the 10kg check-in bag?
Ryanair presents this as a benefit of the checked product, subject to prohibited-item and dangerous-goods rules. Cabin-liquid screening rules do not apply to a bag already accepted into the hold.
Can a power bank go in the 10kg checked bag?
No. Keep it in the cabin and follow Ryanair’s limits and placement rules.
Do I get Priority Boarding with the 10kg check-in bag?
Not from that bag purchase alone. Priority & 2 Cabin Bags and Regular are the relevant cabin-and-priority paths.
What if Priority & 2 Cabin Bags is sold out?
Ryanair says a 10kg check-in option may still be available, but it must be dropped before security and will travel in the hold.
When does Ryanair bag drop close?
The stated cutoff is currently 40 minutes before departure. It changes to 60 minutes for flights departing from 10 November 2026.
Which 10kg option is cheaper?
Neither always wins. Current fee ranges overlap and prices vary by flight and booking time, so compare the two live products you are actually offered.
Which option is faster after landing?
The cabin bag usually is, because you do not wait at baggage reclaim. The checked option can be easier before boarding because you are not carrying the larger case.
