Current status — last checked September 8, 2026. ChatGPT access is now a three-part decision: which plan you have, which surface you are using, and which model is available there.
That matters because the same account can expose different models in Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex, especially during a gradual rollout.
PrismGist uses this page as a living map. Start here, choose the decision you actually need to make, and then move to the focused guide or checker.
If your decision is between ecosystems rather than OpenAI tiers, use ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro to compare the two $20 individual plans.
Access troubleshooting: OpenAI now says Astra requires Codex CLI 0.153.0 or newer. In the desktop app, update to the latest available version before treating a missing model as an account-access problem.
Start with your task
Do not begin with “What is the strongest model?” Begin with “What am I trying to get done?”
| Your job | Best starting surface | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation, explanation, brainstorming, iterative reasoning | Chat | Which plan/model gives enough capability? |
| Longer multi-step work and a finished deliverable | Work | Which model and allowance fit the workload? |
| Software development, repository changes, debugging, tests | Codex | Which model gives the right capability/usage tradeoff? |
OpenAI currently describes Chat as the conversational experience, Work as an agent for longer multi-step work and finished deliverables, and Codex as the software-development surface.
If the boundary is unclear, go to ChatGPT Chat vs Work vs Codex: What’s the Difference?
Why GPT-6 Astra made this confusing
GPT-6 Astra is the current acquisition hook because availability is surface-dependent.
OpenAI currently says:
- GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is rolling out in normal Chat for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise;
- Plus includes Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex as rollout reaches the account;
- availability can differ between Chat, Work and Codex while rollout is gradual.
So a Plus user can legitimately see Astra in Codex or Work without seeing Astra as the normal Chat path.
If your real decision is whether that difference justifies paying more, go to ChatGPT Plus vs Pro: Is Pro Worth It for GPT-6 Astra?
Four decisions this hub covers
1. Should you stay on Plus or move to Pro?
Use the Plus-vs-Pro guide when the bottleneck is access or sustained capacity rather than curiosity about the newest model.
It answers:
- whether you specifically need Astra-powered GPT-6 Pro in normal Chat;
- whether Plus Work/Codex capacity is actually blocking productive work;
- when occasional credits are more rational than a permanent plan upgrade.

2. Why is Codex/Work allowance disappearing so quickly?
PrismGist already has an indexed Codex usage guide. That page is being updated in place for the Astra era rather than replaced by a second competing usage article.
It owns:
- current Codex message-range estimates;
- Astra vs Sol/Terra/Luna throughput tradeoffs;
- five-hour and weekly-limit interpretation;
- model-routing and quota-conservation tactics.

3. Should the task be in Chat, Work or Codex?
Use the surface guide when your problem is not the subscription itself but where the job belongs.

4. I just want a direct recommendation
Use the ChatGPT Plan & Model Checker when you want to choose your plan, task and preferred surface and receive a source-dated recommendation without reading every comparison first.
A durable way to choose models
Model names change faster than good routing principles.
Use this ladder:
- choose the surface that matches the job;
- use the lowest-cost model that reliably solves it;
- move to the strongest model when extra reasoning changes the outcome;
- reserve scarce high-end capacity for uncertainty, risk and difficult decisions rather than repetition.
That rule survives beyond Astra.
Current GPT-6 Astra map
This is intentionally a summary, not a substitute for the focused plan guide.
| Question | Current official direction |
|---|---|
| Astra in Plus normal Chat? | Do not treat this as the current Plus Chat path. |
| Astra in Plus Work? | Included with limited usage as rollout reaches the account. |
| Astra in Plus Codex? | Included with limited usage as rollout reaches the account. |
| Astra-powered GPT-6 Pro in normal Chat? | Rolling out for Pro $100/$200, Business and Enterprise. |
| Can rollout differ by surface? | Yes. |
| Can credits force early rollout? | No. |
For account-specific availability, the product UI and official OpenAI documentation remain the source of truth.
Existing PrismGist pages and their jobs
PrismGist already has GPT-6/Astra pages. They should complement this hub rather than compete with it.
/ai/gpt-6-release-date/owns release/status history./gpt-6-astra-cursor/owns Cursor/OpenAI integration implications./codex-gpt-5-6-usage-limits/owns Codex usage and model-routing economics.
The hub owns none of those narrow intents. Its job is to help users find the right decision path.
What this hub will not do
- It will not publish one new URL for every temporary model-picker change.
- It will not promise that an eligible account has received a gradual rollout.
- It will not turn estimated message ranges into guaranteed quotas.
- It will not recommend a more expensive plan merely because a newer model exists.
- It will not duplicate the detailed usage guide or the Plus-vs-Pro decision page.

FAQ
Why can two people on the same plan see different Astra access?
OpenAI says rollout is gradual and availability can differ between Chat, Work and Codex. Eligibility and actual account rollout are not always the same moment.
Is Work just normal Chat with a stronger model?
No. OpenAI positions Work as a longer multi-step execution surface for finished deliverables, while Chat is conversational.
Is Codex only for coding?
Codex is OpenAI’s dedicated software-development and technical-work surface. For broader non-code multi-step work, Work is the more natural starting point.
Where should a Plus user start if Astra usage is the problem?
Use the existing Codex usage-limits guide. It owns allowance, model-routing and quota-conservation questions.
Where should a Plus user start if normal Astra Chat access is the problem?
Use the Plus-vs-Pro guide. It owns the upgrade decision.
