GPT-6 Astra + Cursor availability · Checked September 22, 2026
Is GPT-6 Astra available in Cursor? OpenAI now documents GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT, Codex and the OpenAI API. Cursor’s current public model list does not list Astra, however, and Cursor says OpenAI bring-your-own-key access supports standard, non-reasoning chat models shown in its model picker.
Short answer: GPT-6 Astra is confirmed by OpenAI, but native or BYOK Astra support in Cursor is not confirmed by the current Cursor sources checked. Treat Cursor’s live model picker as the account-specific answer. If you need Astra for repository work today, Codex is the confirmed OpenAI route when your plan, rollout and client support it.
The distinction that matters
| Path | What current evidence supports |
|---|---|
| GPT-6 Pro in normal ChatGPT Chat | Available or rolling out by eligible plan, account and workspace controls. |
| GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work or Codex | Included by eligible plan as rollout reaches the account; Plus and Business Standard usage is limited. |
| Astra as a native Cursor model | Not listed in Cursor’s current public model documentation. Verify the live Cursor model picker rather than inferring from OpenAI access. |
| Astra through an OpenAI API key | OpenAI documents the gpt-6-astra API model, but API access is separate from ChatGPT-plan access. Cursor’s current BYOK documentation limits OpenAI support to standard, non-reasoning chat models shown in its picker, so API existence does not establish Cursor compatibility. |
Astra is officially GPT-6 technology now
This page previously said Astra was only upcoming and was not officially connected to GPT-6 or Codex. Those claims are obsolete.
OpenAI now states that GPT-6 Pro is powered by GPT-6 Astra. It also documents Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, including limited Plus access and larger Pro allowances as the rollout reaches each account.
What Codex access means for a Cursor user
Codex is OpenAI’s dedicated software-development surface. OpenAI describes it as the place to write or debug code, run tests and commands, review changes, and work with a repository.
That gives a Cursor user a practical OpenAI route for repository work, but it does not turn Codex into a native Cursor model-picker entitlement. Treat these as separate questions:
- Can my OpenAI plan use Astra in Codex? Check the OpenAI rollout, plan allowance and current product UI.
- Can Cursor select Astra natively? Check Cursor’s current product UI and documentation.
- Can I use an OpenAI API model from Cursor? Verify an actual documented API model identifier and the editor’s current BYOK support before assuming compatibility.
Before concluding Astra is missing
OpenAI says Astra requires Codex CLI 0.153.0 or newer. It also recommends updating the ChatGPT Desktop app to the latest available version. Rollout is gradual and may differ between Chat, Work and Codex.
For managed workspaces, permissions can also change the answer. Enterprise access depends on workspace model settings, and Business seat type affects included allowance.
OpenAI API access still does not prove Cursor access
Signing in to Codex with ChatGPT uses the ChatGPT plan’s usage and billing. Using an API key follows API model access and API pricing. OpenAI now documents gpt-6-astra for API use, but access can depend on the API organization, project and rollout.
Cursor adds a separate compatibility boundary: its current BYOK page says OpenAI support is for standard, non-reasoning chat models and that the model picker shows what is available. Do not buy a Cursor plan or configure BYOK for Astra unless the model actually appears in Cursor’s current picker or Cursor documents support.
Which surface should you use?
If the job is primarily software development, start with Codex. If the job is longer multi-step non-code work, use Work. If you want iterative conversation, use Chat. The Chat vs Work vs Codex guide owns that routing decision.
If the real problem is allowance burn rather than editor choice, use the Codex usage-limits guide.
If you are deciding what your current plan can use or whether an upgrade is necessary, use the ChatGPT Plan & Model Checker. It routes by plan, task and surface without assuming that a documented OpenAI model is already enabled in Cursor.

FAQ
Has OpenAI announced Astra in Codex?
Yes. OpenAI says Plus, Pro and eligible managed plans can use Astra in Codex as rollout reaches the account, subject to the applicable allowance and workspace controls.
Does Astra appearing in Codex mean it is available in Cursor?
No. Codex and Cursor are separate products. Verify native Cursor availability in Cursor’s current model picker and documentation.
Can I use GPT-6 Astra through Cursor BYOK?
Not on the evidence checked September 22. OpenAI documents an Astra API model, but Cursor’s BYOK documentation currently limits OpenAI support to standard, non-reasoning chat models shown in its model picker.
Can I use my ChatGPT subscription as an API key?
No. OpenAI documents ChatGPT-plan usage and API-key billing as separate paths.
