Short answer: the London airport with the lowest flight fare is not always the cheapest trip. Add the bags and seats your party needs, then add the complete journey from the airport to your real London destination. A slightly higher fare can win when it has a cheaper transfer, a better arrival station or much less travel time.

Why “cheapest London airport” has no universal answer
London is not one destination. A rail service that is convenient for Paddington can be awkward for Canary Wharf. A coach that looks cheap may add a transfer and a long wait. A taxi quote can be economical for four people but expensive for one. Early departures and late arrivals can remove the public-transport option you expected to use.
The right comparison therefore starts with two flight options, not two airport reputations. Use the same currency and the same trip scope for both sides.
| Cost layer | What to enter | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Flight | Fare per traveller | Comparing a headline fare with a checkout total |
| Required extras | Bags, seats and unavoidable booking extras per traveller | Forgetting that an extra repeats across the party |
| Ground transport | One complete round-trip quote for the whole party | Using a one-way or station-only price |
| Time | Door-to-destination minutes each way | Comparing different endpoints or ignoring transfers |
| Friction | Optional minutes for awkward connections, early starts or late arrivals | Treating a fragile itinerary as equal to a direct one |
The five airports solve different London journeys
Heathrow (LHR)
Heathrow’s official central-London guide lists the Piccadilly line, Elizabeth line, Heathrow Express, coach and taxi. Those choices trade money against speed and finish at different London stations. Heathrow can beat a lower outlying-airport fare when your destination sits conveniently on the Tube or Elizabeth line, but it can lose when the flight premium is large.
Gatwick (LGW)
Gatwick’s official London page highlights direct rail links and describes central London as less than half an hour away by train. The important detail is the station you need: Victoria, London Bridge, Blackfriars and other Thameslink stops can produce very different onward journeys.
Stansted (STN)
Stansted’s official London guide lists train, coach and taxi choices. An advance coach or train price can preserve a low airfare, but the distance and central-London endpoint can make a small flight saving disappear—especially for a late arrival or a destination on the opposite side of London.
Luton (LTN)
London Luton Airport’s rail guide explains that the terminal connects to Luton Airport Parkway by the Luton DART before the mainline journey. Price and time comparisons should include that complete airport-to-destination chain, not only the train segment from the Parkway station.
London City (LCY)
London City Airport’s transport guide connects the terminal to the TfL network by DLR. LCY can justify a higher fare for some east-London and Docklands destinations because the ground leg is short and simple. It may offer less value when your destination is far west.
Worked example: when the lower fare nearly loses
This example is illustrative, not a current fare or transport quote. Two travellers are choosing between Heathrow and Stansted:
| Input | Heathrow option | Stansted option |
|---|---|---|
| Fare per traveller | £85 | £60 |
| Required extras per traveller | £20 | £25 |
| Flight + extras for two | £210 | £170 |
| Round-trip ground quote | £32 | £70 |
| Cash total | £242 | £240 |
The Stansted flights look £50 cheaper before extras. After the party’s extras and ground quote, they win by only £2. A tiny quote change can flip the cash result. If the Heathrow ground journey is also meaningfully shorter, an optional time-adjusted comparison may prefer Heathrow even though Stansted still wins by cash.
Use break-even, not a false prediction
Airport transport is volatile. Advance fares sell out, disruption changes routes and taxi prices depend on the exact destination and time. A useful tool should not pretend one remembered average is live. Instead, PrismGist shows the current cash gap and asks how much the winning airport’s ground quote could rise before the decision becomes a tie.
If one option wins by £18 and its current round-trip ground quote is £42, it remains cheaper until that quote reaches about £60, assuming everything else stays unchanged. That sensitivity is more useful than a generic claim that one airport is “always cheapest.”
When to keep cash and time separate
- Use the cash total first when budget is the binding constraint.
- Add a value of time when a long transfer would cost work time, childcare, sleep or a fragile onward connection.
- Do not turn time into fake precision. If you cannot defend an hourly value, leave it at zero and compare the minutes separately.
- Add friction conservatively. It is a planning buffer, not a prediction of disruption.
Before you book
- Open both live flight checkout screens and include the baggage and seats you will actually buy.
- Quote the complete ground journey to the same destination for the arrival and departure times.
- Use a round-trip party total on both sides.
- Check whether the service runs for an early departure or late arrival.
- Run the calculator and read both the winner and break-even point.
- Recheck the winning route immediately before payment.

Frequently asked questions
Which London airport is cheapest to get into the city?
There is no single winner for every destination, date and party. Quote the route to your exact endpoint. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City connect to different stations and transport networks.
Should I compare one-way or round-trip transport?
Use the full round trip for both options. A cheap arrival route can be unavailable for an early flight home, so the return leg can change the winner.
Does the calculator fetch live fares or train prices?
No. You enter current quotes from the booking pages you trust. This avoids stale defaults and keeps the arithmetic transparent.
Does the calculator store my prices or destination?
The calculation runs in your browser. PrismGist analytics records only categorical fields such as the two airport codes, result class and party-size bucket—not raw fares, totals or a destination.
PrismGist is an independent planning service, not an airport, airline or transport operator. Official routes and live booking terms take priority.
Once you have compared airport transport, put the selected option into the Travel Budget Spreadsheet to keep total trip cost, prepaid expenses and remaining cash separate.
