Current GPT-6 status, source checked
Product status checked October 8, 2026; earlier snapshot September 8, 2026. OpenAI now officially identifies GPT-6 Pro as powered by GPT-6 Astra. It is rolling out in normal ChatGPT Chat for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise plans. Plus includes Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex as rollout reaches the account.
Short answer: GPT-6 is no longer only a rumored name: GPT-6 Pro is rolling out. OpenAI has not announced one universal completion date for every plan, surface, account or API product.
GPT-6 release status at a glance
| Question | Best current answer |
|---|---|

| Is there one GPT-6 release date? | No single universal date is published. The rollout is gradual and can differ by plan and surface. |
| Is Astra officially connected to GPT-6? | Yes. OpenAI now explicitly says GPT-6 Pro is powered by GPT-6 Astra. |
| Can Plus use Astra? | Plus includes limited Astra usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex as rollout reaches the account; this is not the current Plus path for GPT-6 Pro in normal Chat. |

What changed
Earlier official material described Astra as an upcoming or next major model without confirming its product name. That uncertainty is now resolved for the current release: OpenAI’s Help Center explicitly connects the names by saying GPT-6 Pro is powered by GPT-6 Astra.
This page previously treated “Astra = GPT-6” as unconfirmed. That statement is obsolete and has been removed. The durable question is now which plan and surface have received the rollout.
Where GPT-6 Astra is rolling out
- Normal Chat: GPT-6 Pro is rolling out for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise. Enterprise access can depend on workspace model permissions.
- ChatGPT Work: Plus includes limited Astra usage as rollout reaches the account; eligible Pro and Business tiers use their applicable included allowance.
- Codex: Plus includes limited Astra usage as rollout reaches the account; Pro plans have larger included usage.
OpenAI warns that rollout can differ between surfaces. Seeing Astra in Codex does not prove it should already appear as GPT-6 Pro in normal Chat.
Before diagnosing missing access
OpenAI now requires Codex CLI 0.153.0 or newer for Astra. It also recommends updating the ChatGPT Desktop app to the latest available version, even if the app was recently updated automatically.
After checking versions, use the product UI and workspace permissions as the account-specific source of truth. Buying credits can extend supported usage after included limits; it does not provide early rollout access.
What is still not a confirmed release fact?
- a date when every eligible account will have Astra on every surface;
- a promise that Plus will receive GPT-6 Pro in normal conversational Chat;
- API access for every account: the documented API model and ChatGPT subscription entitlements are separate;
- guaranteed message quotas—OpenAI publishes estimates for Work/Codex usage and says actual usage varies by task;
- workspace access when a Business or Enterprise administrator has restricted a model or surface.
